Northampton Falcons off to a flying start

Northampton Falcons got off to a great start to their league campaign last night in their opening Div 2 game against Daventry Vikings. Daventry Vikings started the game well with Alex Mac (25) opening the scoring in the first minute with the sweetest of 3-point shots. Adam Latimer (3) then opened the scoring for Northampton Falcons bringing them back to within a point of the Vikings. Adam Latimer (3) continued to keep the Falcons in touch of the Vikings scoring all of the squads points in the first 5 minutes. The first quarter was quite an even affair with both teams playing good basketball, shooting solid 2's and with very few free-throws given away. With it all to play for Daventry Vikings only held a small lead over the Falcons by the end of the first quarter. Top scorer for Northampton Falcons in the first quarter was Adam Latimer (3) having scored 10 out of the team's 15 points and Chris Davies (12) for Daventry Vikings taking 8 of their 17 points.

With the game so close it only took Nial Glynane (4) and Jamie Young (44) until the 3rd minute to draw the game even once again despite a continued good effort from Daventry Vikings' Alex Mac (25) and by the 6th minute the Falcons took the lead once again from the Vikings. The introduction of Northampton Falcons, Jordan Marshall (00) to the game upped the pace and caused the Vikings squad to get into foul trouble fairly early on in the quarter. With the Falcons team shooting well at the free-throw line they were able to capitalise on the Vikings mistakes and saw 5 of their 20 points come from fouls. With the pressure being felt and a few key players out of circulation due to injury the Vikings squad ended the half down against the visiting Falcons 25-40... helped too by a the sweetest buzzer beating 3-point shot by Fraiser Campbell (5) which was only possible due to the strong rebounding performance by Adam Perry (14). The top scorers for the 2nd quarter were Fraiser Campbell (5) for Falcons with 12 points and Alex Mac (25) with 10 point for Vikings.

With a pep talk from Falcons captain Ben Harvey (0) at halftime the squad knew the game was far from won and went out to increase their lead. The quarter saw Nial Glynane (4) step up to the plate and continue to cause trouble in the key for the Vikings. After their previous defeat against Wellingborough Phoenix Flames the Falcons squad had learnt from their mistakes and ran a completely clean quarter, keeping the Vikings away from the free-throw line. The Vikings squad were still playing strong and their strong defence caused the Falcons to only add 12 points to their tally. The quarter ended 12-7 to Falcons who with all pressures that come with an opening game of the season were glad to have their substantial first half lead. Top Scorers for the quarter were Nial Glynane (4) with 6 points for Falcons and Alex Mac (25) for Vikings with 3 points.

The 4th quarter saw both teams continue to push hard. With a lead of 16 points and the momentum in their favour the Falcons were in high spirits but the Vikings were determined to close the gap. A dominant performance from Justin Robinson (0) taking 5 points for the Vikings meant that they were able to reduce the gap but unfortunately for the Vikings it was too little too late and the Falcons squad took home the win. Justin Robinson (0) also kept a clean sheet throughout the game along with Kane Alexander (23) James Shirley (25), Damian Sokol (35) and Daniel Gresly (13) for the Falcons.

With their first Division 2 League game being a success the Falcons now move up to 3rd in the league and are looking to continue with their great form. Northampton Falcons team captain, Ben Harvey said after the game "All the team worked well as a unit. The 5 on the court during the match worked for each other offensively providing good looks. For the defence all players where zoned in to their responsibility. A great start to kick off the season, upwards and onwards."
